One oil, one land
Respectful of a generous nature
All the plots currently number 1,000 olive trees. Production, on a human scale, is done while respecting the cycles of nature. The land is not irrigated. All plots of Maison aeterna are worked while preserving plant cover. They are maintained all year round to limit water competition, nevertheless preserve biodiversity and limit the direct action of the sun’s rays on the soil.
A terroir with multiple facets
The plots facing west are located on the hillsides and benefit from red earth soil with a loamy-clay-sandy composition. They are not sensitive to crusting, thus limiting the formation of superficial crusts. It is a soil rich in organic matter which, however, needs to be amended every year. The wind is present moderately but regularly, thus limiting the attack of flying pests such as the olive fly.
Living and warm soils
The south-west facing plots are surrounded by hedges, thus less exposed to the wind but more conducive to the development of the olive cycle for early harvests through more stable temperature maintenance. Their soil is more calcareous and requires a more constant supply of organic matter to supplement and/or rebalance the different minerals necessary for the proper development of the olive trees.
"Whatever the destination, what matters is the way we take to get there."
It is in Montclus, in the Gard department, in Occitan Provence, that the story of aeterna begins. Sandrine, originally from Lyon, fell under the spell of the region in 2016 and discovered oleiculture.
After a career of nearly 30 years in communication, she chose to undertake a professional change towards this profession, which is full of meaning for a nature lover.
After several years of increasing her skills, training and agricultural internships, she produced her first harvest in 2020 and created the aeterna brand, a 100% french oil, organically produced.
A commitment, values
The conversion to organic farming was initiated in 2020 to achieve AB certification from the 2023 harvest and offer EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) in perfect harmony with the values of its founder.
Maison aeterna does not use pesticides in order to encourage the development of auxiliaries, in full accordance with its ecological commitments and its work ethics.
Each step is mastered
As of the 2020 season, Sandrine joined the team of an oil mill certified in Organic Agriculture, located in Ardèche 25 km from her plots. She was trained to manage each stage of the transformation. Her olives are therefore crushed and kneaded within 15 hours of harvest. The oil is cold extracted under her control and then stored in large stainless steel tanks protected from light and air. Maison aeterna’s oils are stored in Salazac. Air-conditioning guarantees that the temperature is maintained in both summer and winter. Each stage of the product’s life is designed to be as responsible as possible.
A fair return of things
The pruned timber is crushed and spread on site thus stimulating the biological activity of the soil in the plots and promoting biodiversity, which leads to : – a reduction of the carbon footprint (no evacuation or combustion) – regulation of water needs – improvement of the soil structure.
